I believe words matter, so while I am trained and certified as a postpartum doula I am intentionally choosing not to use this term to describe the work that I practice.

The word ‘Doula’ is Greek, meaning “female slave for the child-bearing woman”. This suggests that minoritized women were subjucated and required to care for other women against their will. I want reclaim the magnificent work that can be done to empower individuals outside of the brutal historical context of this word. With that, I am choosing to call this work postpartum caregiving and I invite you to do the same!

This Sounds Like Doula Work, Is It?
